              1. Rubber Chemicals - An Overview

Broadly the Rubber Chemicals can be classified into the following categories

                Antidegradants or Antioxidants

These are essential chemicals which ensures that the normal or desired life cycle of a rubber product is achieved.

All unsaturated polymers are vulnerable to Reactive Environmental Factors such as: Oxygen, Heat, UV light & Weathering, Heavy metal ions, Dynamic Flex -Fatigue and Ozone

These factors degrade polymers causing substantial changes in the Physical Properties of the Rubber Products and ultimately lead to their failure during service or shorten the expected service life in the absence of Antidegradants/Antioxidants.

These chemicals do not eliminate elastomer degradation, but they substantially inhibit the rate of auto oxidation. Depending on the types and combinations of antioxidants used, the polymer can be protected during the entire phase of the product’s life cycle and effectively increase the life of rubber products.

Antioxidants are chemicals predominantly protect unsaturated polymers from Oxygen, Heat, heavy metal ions whereas Antidegradants, besides the above-mentioned degradative forces also protect Polymers from more aggressive degradative forces such as ozone and Flex-Fatigue.

The following are the various types of Antidegredants/Antioxidants that are generally consumed in rubber applications.

None of the individual products under this category can be interchanged. At best the dosages of the same can be enhanced or reduced depending on the type of rubber application.

Px 13 (6 PPD) and TDQ (TMQ) are the main products under the category of Antioxidants version of rubber chemicals. These two together account for over 95% of the actual consumption.

In respect of other products, Nocil can supply if it is of a decent volume.

                Accelerators

These are critical and essential chemicals which accelerates the sulphur cross linking reaction (vulcanization) and impart desired physical properties to rubber products and enable manufacturing of products on a largescale at an optimum cost.

An accelerator is defined as the chemical added into a rubber compound to increase the speed of vulcanization and to permit vulcanization to proceed at lower temperature and with greater efficiency.

Accelerator also decreases the quantity of sulphur necessary for vulcanization thus improving 'aged' properties of the rubber compound.

The pre-vulcanization inhibitor PVI(CTP) functions as vulcanization retarder which is a part of accelerator system

Products MBT, MBTS, CBS, MOR, TMT, TBBS (NS), DCBS, PVI fall under this category.

                Others

In addition to the above, NOCIL also manufactures products which are used for the manufacture of non-automobile industry products and for specialized applications

Products F, ZDC, ZDBC, ZMBT, SDBC, ZBZDC, DHTS fall under this category.
